Stephen Mullan (Tenor)

Stephen was born in Cardiff, Wales. He began singing at an early age, achieving several prizes as a young soloist. He later enrolled on the Performers Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. During his studies he won numerous competitions and was awarded a scholarship to study in Florence, Italy.

After graduating from the Guildhall, he moved to Italy and was immediately engaged by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, where he worked with conductors such as Guilini, Mehta, Muti, Ozawa and Pretre.

In 1999 Stephen won first prize in the Concorso Internazionale per Gli Artisti del Coro della Scala, Milan, and joined the La Scala chorus. At La Scala he performed with conductors Abbado, Barenboim, Chailly, Chung, Gatti, Sawallis, Maazel, Rostropovich and Masur, and some of the celebrated directors he has had the pleasure to work with include Zeffirelli, Bondi, Carsen, Vick, Miller and Pizzi. He has also appeared in comprimario roles in La Forza del Destino, Peter Grimes, Alcina, The Rake’s Progress and the Stravinsky Mass.

His opera repertoire spans a wide range of styles, from Purcell to contemporary works, and his roles include Turiddu from Cavalleria Rusticana, Azael from L’Enfant Prodigue, Mengone from Lo Speziale, Remendado and Dancairo from Carmen for the British Youth Opera. In April 2010 he created the title role of Sigismondo in the world premiere of David Tukici’s opera La Vita é Sogno at the National Opera of Tirana, Albania.

In recognition of his charity work, Stephen was knighted and became a Cavalier of the Order of Saint Maurice and Saint Lazarus, performing the celebratory mass in Geneva for Vittorio Emmanuele III of Savoia and the Patriarch of Jerusalem.

In 2012 he played the role of Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly for Operaimas in Catalunya, and of Cavaradossi in Tosca for Panama Opera. He also attended the prestigious Salzburg Voice Festival after being awarded a full scholarship.

He will soon release an album under MPhilRecords, in Viena, and will perform in several concerts in the same city. He pursues his technique perfecting with professor Mariuccia Carando in Barcelona.
